If the industry at large had any sense, what defined Unix would be
conformance to a specification such asThe Open Group's Single Unix
Specification. The Open Group also own the UNIX trademark, which is
handy.
Strictly speaking, Linux is only a kernel. The OS as a whole should be
known as GNU/Linux.
GNU is of course an acronym: GNU's *NOT* UNIX.
Clearer now? Of course not, but does it matter, Windows 7 is on the
way, and Vista will soon be forgiven...
