I agree. I currently have windows:

Newsreader (multiple)
Mail client (two)
Web browser (several)
System monitor
Console window (mainly for managing servers that don't have X)

Plus panels with icons, clock, etc.

I use the console window on this machine for programming, mainly.

And I've been using 'UNIX' since 1976. I only used UNIX (without the 
quotes) for about four years; then it was BSD, and still is.
