I've been running the free edition Communigate Pro server on the home
Alphaserver with overall good luck. It was intended as a learning box
so we could sell the product on various platforms at work but I
haven't had time to do much beyond the basics with it.

It works fine. Webmail works fine. I assume the POP and IMAP
problems reported with TCPIP Services wouldn't happen but I can't be
certain.

PMDF is (was?) also available for hobbyist use. I would be running
that at home except I could not get the PSC PreciseMail anti-spam
software running with HP TCPIP Services SMTP first (because the HP
product refused to work on any port other than 25...), then work
decided to concentrate on CGPro due to cost consideration for our
smaller clientele.

So seriously take a look at CGPro if it will meet your needs. Try it
free, use either adware and unlimited accounts, or 5 accounts 'free',
or if you like it enough you can buy a licensed copy. (disclaimer, my
company sells the product, I don't, this is a personal endorsement).

Or check in with Process for the PMDF hobbyist package if you
qualify. Folks who don't qualify for hobbyist or don't want to pay
for a better email server may have to deal with TCPIP Services
foibles, but home/hobby users don't.
