In the absence of other contributions...
There were various flavours of 3100. One of the last members of the
3100 family was indeed closely related to the MicroVAX 4100, indeed if
I recall correctly the same motherboard was in both, and the (main)
difference was indeed that the 4100 did DSSI. A "Systems and Options"
chapter from the relevant era might reveal more.
