It's a graphics card issue - not enough colour map entries iirc. A cheap 
graphics card that works fine in a pc, often won't work well under X. 
 From  experience with Sun sparc machines, if you want to keep all the 
colours, the answer is usually to put in a better graphics card. 
Otherwise, have a poke around in the X config files or style manager -> 
colour from the cde desktop...
