All the problems I've had with DEC mice have been mechanical:-
1) Break in cable -- probably near the entry to the body; may be able
to shorten it or swap the cable from a mouse with a different problem.
2) Duff microswitch -- replace from another mouse if you can't buy a
new one.
3) Worn ball (this is the most infuriating fault, as it works some of
the time and on some parts of the mat, but never where you want to go)
-- swapping the ball may work, but I suspect the rollers wear too. Of
course, you should check the ball isn't just dirty/shiny. Platenclene
(if it's still available?) works wonders. Don't forget to clean the
rollers inside too.
