At the time, it gained interoperability with a large number of systems
behind EBCDIC based message routers. They could not be counted on to
preserve a more reasonable prefix escape character. I think that is no
longer a serious concern. So now the technical value of quoted-
printable is interoperability with the installed base.

Not sure whether I would upgrade to a quoted-printable aware
newsreader if I were you. Do you enjoy complaining about the problem
more than you would enjoy the solution?
