Moving SMTP/POP/IMAP to my Xserve was a HUGE improvement for me. The
SMTP/IMAP software on VMS isn't ready for prime time with any long
header line causing the SMTP reveiver to split the line, rendeing the
header invalid, and causing the iMAP/POP to ignore the header and
synthetize one, and this made any attachements unusable. A real pain.

Dealing with CRTC proceedings, I would get many messages with long
distribution list, and I ended up having to fire up DECW$MAIL to find
the message, then copy the file name, use TPU to edit the file and fix
the header that was broken by the TCPIP software and then hope that the
IMAP server would serve the message properly.

No more of that. The mail stores on unix may be primitive flat files,
but at the end of the day, you don't have to go in there to fix poor
software design.
