The issue is not age per se.
Your post implied that VMS mail has a poor design.
But given the presumed age of that software,
it must have been designed in VMS' heydays,
so one can't blame management.
Unix OTOH shows that even an old design can be
successful for decades if it's robust and flexible
enough to meet customers demand.
