Although a new CEO at HP might make changes, one should not have any
hopes or expectations this will happen.
VMS is an orphaned child that HP has been forced to have custody of. It
gives it enough food to survive and that is it. HP has upheld its
promise to continue to support the existing customer base. Alpha was
murdered 9 years ago, and HP is still supporting it, and 8.4 is being
released on Alpha and that Itanic thing.
Once you remove any expectation of HP leveraging the full value and
potential for VMS, you see that HP has maintained its commitment to
support the existing customer base. And that is all HP ever promised it
would do, and that is all you should expect it to do.
Learn to accept the fact that HP will not bring VMS back to an active life.
Criticisms on the various decisions made by what is left of VMS
engineering have no real impact because in the end, HP marketing or
whatever will dictate to VMS engineering what features should be
implemented (such as those kit signing things).
There is no DECUS anymore to provide direct feedback to engineering on
what features are needed. There are a few important customers who have a
direct relationship with HP marketing and they are the ones who end up
being listened to when the time comes to decide what new feature should
be added with the fixed/limited development budget for VMS.
If VMS doesn't have the features that you would want/need/require, and
you are not important enough to have direct contact with people high
enough at HP to make such decisions, then you shoudl simply go with an
operating system that is actively developped and does provide all the
goodies you want.
