We started this thread about Samba on Itanium hence my discussion of 
byte/word instructions.

For pre EV56 systems, yep you'll need to deal with only long/quad 
instructions.  Which was the main reason for the /GRANULARITY qualifier on 
those Alpha compilers.  For Itanium, we kept the /GRANULARITY qualifier to 
be compatible with Alpha, but you always get byte granularity since we can 
provide that without any extra overhead.
