Perhaps you touched the big heatsink attached to the top?  I doubt the chip 
itself would last long without it.  The Intel E8500 in my PC wouldn't last 
too long without its heatsink either (most CPUs today wouldn't either).  The 
heatsink on my XP1000's CPU is certainly warm but not waffle-iron hot.
