The "ping of death" was a problem about a decade ago. If an ICMP echo
request ("ping") was sent where the data portion was less than 65536 bytes
but the data portion plus the IP header exceeded 65536 bytes, the remote
system usually had problems dealing with it, often crashing. It was a
good way to remotely crash a problem system, and a good way for hackers to
cause mayhem.
Just about everyone has fixed this by now.
