and Toshiba's are sometimes recognized as RRD*.

Seems to depend.
I have seen DECstations boot from CD-R in a RRD40,
whereas VAXstations reported lots of errors with the same drive.

I haven't seen one in the past two or three years.
And I guess they won't be cheap.
