Bob, I did only put down my first thought...

But shure the flat file approach (RMS or not) will grow back to its
glory sometime, and I was trying to help as best I could.

Thinking outside the box keeps (well sometimes) evolution going. (Or
we can all have fun at work at least)

But of course you are right, this was not what OP asked for. And I
think you are better suited to choose suggestions than I am, as I
gather from your response that you now started learning DEC BASIC...
