Yep, stability of OS is much more of an issue than HW reliability these days.
Also, the number of OS instances required is another biggie. When combined, i.e.
the stability (monthly security patches etc) with the huge numbers of OS
instances, the question has to be asked "can you afford Windows and/or Linux?"
With OpenVMS, it is is very common to run multiple Apps and even DB's in the
same cluster and even on the same OS instance.
However, with Windows and Linux servers, the culture is such that they have
grown up with every App group having their own server and hence it is very
difficult to convince App groups on Wintel/Linux that they should share the
same OS instance.
It's one of the reasons why VMware is so popular i.e. it allows one to save
some HW costs, but also does not force one to break the one OS, one bus App
culture.
Unfortunately, one of the next big things coming is VM consolidation and
that is when it is going to get real ugly in the Wintel/Linux world.
