The problem as I recall it was that in the early 1980s we didn't expect
our applications to last so long without a complete rewrite necessitated
by moving to a new platform.
In spite of reports that IBM code compiled way back when still runs
today, unless you had already reached the dizzy heights of IBM's top
offerings (e.g. MVS) when you started your development, you were
probably in for a rewrite by moving up to a larger model.
