Some standard products (not cheap) are IBM WebSphere MQ (formerly
IBMMQ) or Bea MQ.

Going over java (JNI to get to fortran) can be opensource if you dont
want it to cost, but I think you have to go JNI/C(++ if you like) to
VB. but its cheap.

My quick fix was FTP, buffering and a dream to test ;) but not to
quick (2-3 sek poll on my systems) Defending on what you want the
solution will differ. In my case a delay is tolerable up to 30-60 sek
and eaven then only for the endusers visual update. Not for the
systems functionality itself.
