Nothing new.  Microsoft thinks everything they create is incredibly
great, until they release the next thing they want you to buy, then
the old stuff is crap.  I remembered and located a quote from BG when
win95 was released (extra included for context):

"The advertising that Apple's running is a very positive contributor
because it serves to raise the awareness of Windows 95 with Win 3.1
users," Gates said in an exclusive interview with MacWEEK. "I'm not
saying there's anything wrong with them. But they're good for us as
well. Apple says, 'Hey, Win 3.1 is crummy and it always was crummy.'
And we say, 'No, it just turned crummy. It was really great till
Thursday.' "

Embedded corporate cultural attitude there.
