Perhaps you should consider NETLIB from MadGoat.  It provides all of 
the usual socket functions, but with a more familiar VMS-style 
interface.  I think this was freeware, so look for it in the usual 
places.  I see that NETLIB V2.4 was the FREEWARE_8 CD.
