Depends on the software. I've ported a lot of software between
TOPS-10, Xerox RBM, SEL RTM, IBM's OS for 360 so old I can't
remember the name, RSX-11M, VMS, TOPS-20, many flavors of UNIX,
Linux, MS-DOS, MS Windows, MacOS, ...
It's amaizing how much trouble you can have porting a simple ANSI
C routine that manipulates tapes between flavors of UNIX, or how
little trouble you can have porting ANSI Fortran-66 between 32 bit
processors.
