To be pedantic, files can be in no directory, but not under normal
circumstances.
The above statement is not accurate. Most "temporary" files produced
by executable images exist without directory entries. Print files are
the most common. When the file is spooled to the printer, there is no
specific directory entry. Many of the prphaned files are printer
files.
