I seem to remember reading something (or hearing it while on a training course) a long time ago that the parent of 000000.DIR was a "special" directory with notation as [000,000]000000.DIR .  It does work:

$ dir/full dsa0:[000,000]000000.dir

Directory DSA0:[000,000]

000000.DIR;1                  File ID:  (4,4,0)               
Size:            3/16         Owner:    [1,1]
Created:    12-SEP-2008 09:15:43.79
Revised:    18-MAY-2009 12:48:38.86 (6)

That might just be some legacy from the RSX days though.
