It confuses people because the arrow on that key seems to indicate a
movement to the left.
Besides, on a DECwriter, that key did not cause the paper to travel to
the right, it caused the head to travel to the left. (Ok, it was more
complex, because if you pause for a second, the head would then move to
the right so you could see what you just typed, but had no idea or the
head's position, and when you resumed typing, the head would travel back
to the left).
Then again, the current generation have probably never seen a
typewriter and when theuy hear "carriage", they probably think about
that fancy gold plated buggy attached to horses that is used by the
Queen of england.
I've personally stopped catering to an 80 column limit. But I keep it
reasonable.
