I think 80 characters per line is enough for most people.  Just about 
any terminal, printer, or emulator can display 80 column lines.  Many 
can handle 132 columns but I'd stick to 80 unless there is some very 
good reason to use more.  You might also look at a book, either hard 
cover or paperback and count the characters per line.
