The systems themselves, sure. However, some patches/upgrades are
necessary in (my) real world, such as anti-spam features in TCPIP. Some
are nice improvements, like improvements in volume shadowing. I doubt
any hobbyist needs or wants support (hardware or softare) in the narrow
sense; part of the fun is doing one's own support. But it seems that
patch access is now only possible in conjunction with some sort of
support.
