My hunch is the drive is fine and the troubles are termination-related,
caused by the adapter. I looked at similar adapters and noticed that
they come with a warning that the unused 18 lines are not terminated.
I found a 50-pin to 50-pin internal cable to use instead of the adapter
+ 68-pin cable, but it doesn't have the crimp-on terminator. Once I get
my hands on a 50-pin internal active terminator, I will try it again.
On a related note, I connected the TLZ7L to the Linux box and it appears
to work perfectly! Slow (390 KiB/s, or approximately 1.4 GiB/hour), but
true. Also, the DDS-2 light comes on when I insert a DDS-2 tape. After a
week of hell with the HP Surestore DAT 24 drive, this is heaven.
I have the TLZ07/TLZ7L manual from DEC in PDF form. If anyone needs it,
let me know.
Nathan
