You can.  I was taught that actually doing so with data you cared about 
was a bad idea.  If any one member of the bound volume fails, kiss your 
data good bye!

I created a couple of bound volume sets in my career and was lucky with 
them.  I wouldn't do it today!  With the REALLY BIG disks available 
today there is little reason to create or use a bound volume set.  If
I needed more storage than a single drive could store, I'd look at a 
RAID-5 set.
