Whether a chip is successful or not doesn't depend much on its
design but rather on how many $$$ can be thrown at its
development and production and whether these costs can be
recouped. For x86 that's an easy game owing to its monopoly,
intel can recoup the costs by volume.
The other extreme would be IBM, who probably can charge
(almost) any price for their zSeries.
I don't see much survival probability inbetween these extremes.

I'm pretty sure DEC didn't say anything anymore in 1999.
