The CPU on those things is the most temperature sensitive device.  The
CPU has a temperature sensor and the firmware will power the system off
if the CPU gets too hot.  You can monitor the temperature when running
(from VMS, F$GETSYI("TEMPERATURE_VECTOR"), lowest byte) and see if
it runs hotter with the lid open.

I know someone who temporarily stuck a DS10 riser board in a DS10L to
see if it would work (it did).
