Linux wasn't really usable before the end of the 1990s.
VMS OTOH lost the race already at the beginning of that decade.
One could even fix a date: on 11 January 1989,
the day the DECstation 3100 was introduced,
DEC themselves admitted that Unix is no longer
a russian truck but would be the future.
