Note that the article is wrong about IBM. IBM had made it clear YEARS
before announing the Lenovo deal that it was seeking to get out of the
consumer PC business. It was under Gerstner that the original
announcements were made, perhaps not as formally as with Apotheker's
announcement, but it was made nevertheless.
And if I am not mistaken, Palmer even used that to justify Digital
focusing on bsiness PCs only. (despte Dec's rapid growth in the PC business)
Apotheker would have been wiser to first find a buyer and and only once
a deal was near final, make an annoucement. The article is right in that
businesses and people will now think twice about buying an HP PC due to
uncertainty.
