Just had a wild thought...

If DEC had a real CEO instead of Palmer, that deal would have consisted
of an agreemwnet where Intel would become a second developper/source of
Alpha chips (or 3rd if you count samsung) and pull out of the IA64
consortium, leaving  HP to decide whether to adopt Alpha or go on its
own with IA64.


With such momemtun, DEC might also have licenced Alpha to AMD and Alpha
might have become "industry standard" and we may not have seen the 8086
upgrade to 64 bits.
