The times I do this, like when I connect to Rechenzentrum Kreuznach's
public access AS/400 (running i5/OS V5R3), it works normally.  I also
tried it on GEIN:: (of DR) and FAFNER::, where they run (V7.3-1 and
V7.2 respectively).

For example, on FAFNER::

I don't recall all the versions of V8.3, but was V5.6-ECO4 delivered
with the installation media, or did you patch it to that version?
