Not sure how many people here also use Solaris, or want to know about
improvements in Solaris since Oracle took over. (up until now, I just
assumed that Oracle would only do minimum development of Solaris as a
leverage for their database engine). This week I was asked to watch a
10 minute promotional video about changes in Solaris-11 and will only
pass along two items that jumped out at me:
1) According to Oracle, Solaris is not fully protected from attack
until it is fully booted (really? I was led to believe that security
was built into UNIX). For this reason, Solaris-11 has been modified so
that the network remains disconnected until booting has finished.
(there was no mention of what to do when booting from a network
storage device like a SAN so maybe the speaker didn't mean physically
disconnected, just really restricted)
2) Like Windows software updates, Solaris-11 software updates can now
be performed automatically or semi-automatically by the target system
(if the system admin desires).
