The best water I had was when I was a kid and I think it came from wells
in that part of the world. I used to look forward to my first taste of
home water after being away on holiday.
The best cups of tea I had were made from untreated water from a spring
on a hillside. The water authorities spent most of their time trying to
get us to switch to their water, using health as an excuse. The real
truth was that the water charges were linked to property values in the
system the privatised water companies inherited from the local
authorities, and they stood to make a healthy profit out of replacing our
own supplies. Maintaining your own pump and filter system wasn't nearly
as expensive as a bill based on the value of your property.
