I never got strung out on any drugs, but knew several people in 60's
Oxford that
did and later in the 70's working in music. Some are now dead from the
experience,
others went on to lead normal lives, some occasionally still use. Have
always been
against prohibition because it hands billions of $ to organised crime
and makes
criminals of otherwise law abiding citizens. It creates a mutually
dependent culture
between traffickers and enforcement that has every interest in
maintaining the status
quo, irrespective of harm done. One could say that is has no redeeming
features
whatsoever. The billions of $ spent worldwide in drug enforcement
programs have been
shown again and again to be a complete failure. Countries like Mexico
suffer horrendous
violence, while others are bought outright, because of the obscene
amounts of money
to be made from the illegal trade.

Yes, if all drugs were decriminalised, there might be a rise in use
initially, but this
would diminish over time as people became aware of the dangers and the
novelty wore off.
Some of the money saved on enforcement could be spent on treatment
centres. The problems
would be nothing like those we have from trying to suppress the trade.
For me, who no
longer has any interest in consumption, btw, there's also the issue of
civil liberties.
Why should any government have the right to dictate what I or anyone
else can imbibe
in the privacy of my own home ?. People going to jail or single mothers
losing custody
of their child because they are found with a bit of weed ?. What kind of
inhumanity is
that ?.

Sorry about the rant, but a problem that really needs radical solutions...

Regards,

Chris
