To encourage you to use a browser to read it?  Something I noticed a few 
months ago was that groups.google refused to let you search newsgroups if 
you weren't logged in to one of their services (Gmail in my case).  I 
assume they do that via cookies, so I set aside a browser just for Gmail 
use and cleared the Google cookies from my usual browser.
