   As they were in the 68K - PPC transition.  But DEC ignored user's
   requests for such to deal with a VAX cluster in which some processors
   had vector instructions and some did not.

   Never seemed to be as usefull for Alpha or IA64, but it was a bit of
   a pain to keep straight across vector and non-vector capable VAXen.
