It just sets a bit in the drive metadata.

This writes zeroes (or the erase pattern if enabled) to every block on the 
drive, expect it to take some time, the bigger the drive the longer.

If you want, you can do INIT/NOERASE and then $ SET VOLUME/ERASE if you
want the Erase-on-Delete behavior but don't want to wait for every block
to be erased.
