My DS10 of 12 years' age used to run rather warm, and eventually started
coughing up intermittent machine checks.
I had observed that the reported CPU temperatures seemed warmer than I
thought was reasonable, but I only started worrying about the temperature
when I installed another DS10 for a friend, and noticed that his ran cooler,
for no apparent reason.
When the machine checks started, I noticed that SOME of the console event
messages implicated the power supply, so I replaced the PSU with one from
Island Computers. No more machine checks.
While I was at it, I replaced one of the front-panel fans (the one in front
of of the CPU). When I dismantled the unit to replace the fan, I discovered
that both fans had originally been installed BACKWARDS.
Anyrate, it's currently at 49C, or around 120F. That's in a room that
averages 80F ambient. No problems since the noted repairs.
FWIW,
Bob Spalding
