I suppose that is what TK50 does, but do the newer DLT go right
to the logical EOT?

I belive that Ultrium does.  It stores in a non-volatile memory
on the cartridge enough to know where the EOT is.  I believe it
can skip to any tape mark, not just the last, and without many
passes through the tape.
