The Toronto Stock Exchance is not well renowned for its IT expertise.

It had upgraded its old system in the 1980s with the hopes that the
montreal exchange would shutdown. Parizeau (PQ) introduced a tax break
for quebeckers investing in stocks trading on the montreal exchange, and
that kept the exchange alive (and prevented the banks still
headquartered in montreal from officially moving to toronto). Toronto
was left with an expensive monster.

Ironically, that monster still couldn't cope with increasing volumes and
the TSE had many glitches. At around 1988 time frame, it was looking
for a new platform, DEC was in the running but because of internal wars
between DEC salesfolks, lost. The system the TSE put in place seemed
fine until volumes again rose to make the TSE slow as molasses.

The montreal exchange moves to a different platform and eventually
merged with the TSE with montreal having onlt derivatives.

I doubt very much that Toronto will be used as a template for the LSE.
It is far more likely that the LSE will force its new system onto
Toronto eventually.

Neither use VMS.

I have a feeling that stock exchanges are becoming like airlines. Once
you join an airline alliance, you only deal with airlines within that
alliance. With OMX mart of Nasdaq, I have a feeling that it will have a
harder time selling its software to "competing" exchange alliances.

Does Deutcshe Borse use OMX or do they have their own ? Any chance this
will go into the NYSE ? or will the NYSE system go into Deutsche Borse ?
