Alpha architecture manuals would have been written by Digital in the
1990s. HP merely completed Compaq's "plan of record" to release EV7 and
a speed bump. Most of the EV7 work was done before HP got its hands on
what was left of Digital.

HP didn't spend much money on Alpha, and reaped the benefits of donating
more of its IP and people to Intel.

BTW, the grey wall stopped at 5.5-2. I believe that starting at VMS 6,
it was the grey shelf with paperback manuals with smaller print.
