   And what was that "size (in pixels)"? I've seen the X
server run out of virtual memory on my system. My
DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.COM says:

[...]
$ decw$server_page_file == "1572864"
$!!! decw$server_page_file == "960000"
$!!! decw$server_page_file == "600000"
$!!! decw$server_page_file == "370000"
[...]

which suggests that I've been raising it over the years.

   So far as I know, SWB doesn't know how to scale an image to
fit.

   Virtual memory is the only limit I know of, but with my
weak psychic powers, I have no idea how the size of your
problem image compares with anything I've displayed. It's
been a while since I've seen the problem, but, as I recall,
there is an error message somewhere (OPCOM, X server log file,
Web browser's parent-process terminal, ...) when the X server
runs out of memory.
