Thanks for all the input. Back to my original question: I'm thinking
mainly of JPEG files viewed by a web browser (or possibly XV or
something similar) (the web browser running on the same machine where
the files are or a different one---perhaps via HTTP across the internet)
which come from a variety of sources: read from CD, transferred via FTP,
downloaded from the web etc. As I mentioned, both formats worked with
the web server (OSU) and web browser (CSWB---running on the same machine
or at least in the same cluster---and a Windows machine across the
internet). I would prefer to have all in the same format. The primary
motivation is that this format should be most likely to work with a
variety of software.
