   For all the superiority of the software, VAXen were not great
   hardware.  At least through the 4000 series, DEC's power supplies
   were not to be bet on for more than 5 years.

   Of course, like many hardware problems, that was solved with software.
   Just put your VAXen into a high availability cluster and who cares
   about the occasional power supply?

   Not that I'm claiming modern hardware is _always_ superior.
