So true. I have seen quite a lot of 2000s over the years and not one of
them had more than 6MB of memory.

You may be confusing DECwindows and VWS. There is DECwindows and also
DECwindows/motif. The basic DECwindows is much smaller and faster than the
motif stuff. VWS is even older, not X11 based. But you are right in that
VWS is appropriate for a 2000. However, it is not anywhere close to a Mac
GUI. In fact it's main advantage over a real serial terminal is being able
to open more than one virtual terminal.
