Go over to comp.lang.fortran and see the various things
people are doing with f2003 and f2008. Two that come
to mind are support for parallel processing in the form
of Co-Arrays, and a variety of OO enhancements that
fit the Fortran model (*not* the C++ model).

Polyhedron Software (http://www.polyhedron.com/) has
a comparison of Fortran compilers for various platforms
which lists features from the f2003 and f2008 that are
supported by various compilers. It's a long list.

People who do serious numerical work, e.g., weather
forecasting, etc., use modern Fortran, BTW.
