Rod,

I don't see a 'crash during boot' other than the attempt to force a
crash after the USB system disk went into mount-verification during
the full startup.

The USB boot driver also seems to have a problem writing to the boot
disk during shutdown.

Try to find out, if booting OpenVMS from a USB disk is really
supported. If it is, raise a call to HP. If it's not, there's not much
you can do.
